VOCData.nl is an independent, non-official collection of digital tools and datasets created to simplify the often-complex process of researching the Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives.
Why Build This?
The VOC archives are a massive treasure trove of over 25 million pages. However, the transition from paper to digital data is full of friction. I built these resources to:
- Bridge gaps — provide lightweight tools for specific tasks like table mapping and glossary exploration.
- Standardise data — help users link their own research to established identifiers such as GLOBALISE IDs.
- Encourage open research — keep code and data accessible so others can build upon them.
Data & Methodology
Most tools on this site rely on open-access datasets. I strive to maintain high standards of data integrity, but as with any independent project, the tools are provided "as-is" for the community to explore and use.
For more robust or "official" historical inquiries, I always recommend cross-referencing with the Dutch National Archives or the GLOBALISE project.
Critical Perspective
Working with the VOC archives means engaging with the records of a colonial enterprise. These documents naturally reflect the biases and power structures of their time. My goal is to provide the tools to analyse this history, but I encourage all users to approach the content with a critical understanding of whose voices are represented and whose are marginalised within these colonial records.
